insurance. a young child dies when a fire erupts into the apartment. the afternoongood afternoon >> whenever somebody dies in a blaze the chicago fire department comes back to that neighborhood the next day to hand out free smoke detectors. this morning they gave away 200 of them. >> can you please contact your landlord? >> members went door

to door handing out smoke detectors in the same neighborhood where it day earlier at a young girl was killed in a fire. if >> our purpose is to give information to the community. that is the one piece of technology that has really changed fire death. >> it was just before 2:30 p.m. when flames engulfed the third floor bedroom of an apartment. the mother tearfully told us that her daughter accidentally set fire to a mattress. >> i went to grab the mattress and tried to throw it out the window. they tried to tell me that my baby was in the room with that fire. she was scared. she hid. she knew she did something wrong. >> fire officials say no smoke detectors were found in the apartment.

the fire commissioner says based on his 35 years as a firefighter he believes a smoke alarm could have saved her life. >> smoke detectors did not exist back then. we had fire deaths in the 100 typically in the city. now they're down to single double digits. right now it is single digits for the year. technology is an important piece. i think people underestimate what it can do. >> in the case of the fire yesterday just those few minutes early warning would have allowed that family to get everyone out of the building before those flames got out of control. >> a three year-old girl was killed after a bookcase fell on her. rescuers tried to revive her. the girl's name was not released and neither

were details on how it happened. the community alert urges women to be extra careful after a sexual assault. investigators are checking whether a police camera in the area may have recorded the offender. >> the attack happened very early tuesday morning as the victim walked in this area near the intersection. it is usually quite busy here. there is not a lot of foot traffic during the overnight hours. >> the teenager was walking around 1:30 a.m. when she was grabbed along the 1900 block. a man dragged her into an alley way. the rapist took off on a bicycle heading north. hours later he spoke with the victim's mother when she came into the spanish coalition for housing to see a building surveillance cameras captured any important clues.

police say driver was drunk when he sped into a crowd in texas killing two people and injuring 23 others. it happened earlier this morning outside a busy night club. five of those injured are in critical condition. austin is hosting

makes the hair feel like it is in the low to mid teens around the area. humidity at 66%. the dew point at 72 degrees. i suppose it is positive we have the visibility of at least 10 mi.. those clouds that are impacting us at the moment, you can notice the leading edge now pushing into northwestern indiana. the back edge approaching parts of northwestern illinois. still snowing up to the north up in parts of the upper peninsula. none of that is expected to bother chicago. it is still snowing rather impressively through parts of the northeast. heavy snowfall affecting southern maine and also vermont. look at that. that is a red flag warning in effect for the central plains. this is a freeze warning
